4th at the 1938 World Cup in France.
SWEDEN 1938 |
Player 1/ Player 2 : player 1 played against Cuba in the quarter-finals then Hungary in the semis (same 11 in the two matches), player 2 played against Brazil in the 3rd place match. Sweden had qualified in the first round due to a withdraw of Austria (Austrian Anschluss) then had eliminated Cuba in the quarter-finals by 8-0 (1-5 then 2-4 losses against Hungary and Brazil).
Now, the team that won the olympic gold in Great Britain in 1948.

3rd at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.
2 schemas here. With first the typical team from the group stage until the deroute against Brazil in the final pool's first day match : player1/ player 2= player match against Italy/ player match 2 against Paraguay. Then it must be added that against Brazil (first match of the 'final pool'), the pair of wingers was Sundqvist on the right and S. Nilsson on the left.
The second schema shows the team that played against Uruguay then Spain, that with two different centre forwards. Once again the first named, by starting reading from the left, played the first match so the second replaced him for the very last match.

Sweden 1950 - 1st Round + Brazil in the 'final pool' |
So once again with Sundqvist on the right and S. Nilsson on the left
against Brazil in the 1st day match of the final pool (p1/ p2 = match
against Italy/ match against Paraguay in the 1st round).
And now the team that played the two last games :

So we take note that Gunnar Johansson, Bror Mellberg and Egon Jönsson replaced respectively Knut Nordahl, Lenart Skoglund and Stellan Nilsson. These three substitutes then made a career in France, like S. Nilsson, while the usual starters K. Nordahl (one of the two brothers of Gunnar), Skoglund (the young phenomenon of the team) and Hesse Jeppson (the star of the team) made a career in Italy (by the way he has scored his two goals in the competition against the Italians). Jeppson was replaced in the last match as he was, after the match against Uruguay, gutted to the point that he decided to stop playing. This resignation that Raynor and the whole Swede delegation categoratically refused in in a first time, and then at one point stopped trying to avoid, has permitted to Ingvar Rydell to make his only one appearance in the World Cup. As for our star Jeppson, he from then on never played again for the national team again. After a stopover in Charlton in '51, he made a fortune in Italy, at Napoli in particular.
Semi-finalist of the Euro '92, in Sweden.
SWEDEN (vs Germany in the s-f's) 1992 |
Björklund, usually the left back in the team, took the place next to Eriksson in the central defense instead of Patrick Andersson, suspended, so the presence of Roger Ljung as the left back.
Usually a starter, the left wing Limpar entered here only when it was near the hour of play.
Usually positionned on the right of the midfield, Ingesson was here the most defensive player of the midfield. A position that best suits him finally, and that he will find again in the future.
Dahlin was turning around the centre-forward, with a preference for the right side. This centre forward was Kenneth Andersson, who had been picked as a starter in the very first match against France (a match during which he was subbed out at one quarter of an hour of the end) but benched for the two remaining matches against Denmark and England.
Brolin was a free-electron.
At last, the right back Roland Nilsson was entitled at going forward.

3rd at the U.S World Cup in 1994.
Two different lineups have to be shown in the case of Sweden again. The one that faced Brazil in the semi-finals in n°1 and the one of the quarter-finals with Romania, in n°2 (making a synthesis-11 is impossible in this team's case).
Thern was absent against Romania. Schwarz was against Brazil through suspension (red card against Romania). Scwharz played in the 3rd place match against Bulgaria. Thern did not, Dahlin neither. At last, a young Henrik Larsson must be mentionned (entered against Romania, did not play against Brazil, played the third place match. A young Blomqvist made some appeaarances in the first round too but he did not play in the k-o stages. "Veteran" Limpar entered in the third place match.

2) in the quarter-finals (against Romania).
Here, Ingesson, apart from his right-midfielder role, could move on the width when Mild remained at the centre or moved on the right to compensate Ingesson's moves. Schwarz stood on left. As for Brolin, he navigated here more on the front of the attack than afterwards in the match against Brazil where he was clearly a right midfielder. He still acted here mainly on the right but also cutted in through the centre, behind the strikers.

It is then the 2002 World Cup that sees Henrik Larsson and his companions (Alexandersson, Svensson, T. Linderoth...) topping their group (draw games with England and Argentina) before to be eliminated by Senegal. Followed by the Ibra's years with qualifications for all the Euro Finals and some ''coups'' by the star striker but no significant collective results, a round of 16 at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and two World Cup missed successively (so in 2010 and 2014). In 1974, Sweden had reached the second round of the World Cup but without being brilliant (by the way what teams were, at that time, exception made of, obviously, Holland), mostly thanks to his goalkeeper Hellström, also a bit thanks to its centre forward Edström. It was also the team of the pillars Nordqvist and Bo larsson... of Kaiserslautern's Sandberg. Also of a young Torstensson, here less in view than with his clubs (Åtvidabergs F.F. then Bayern). At his downhill, old glory Kindvall was also part of the squad.
